Sport wagon joins lineup of sports sedans and coupes. introductionthe cadillac cts is loaded with style, performance and technology, and it delivers the essential attributes of a true sports sedan. It's as refined as its import-brand competitors, and easier to live with than some. By size and function, however, the cts is closer to midsize competitors such as the bmw 5 series, mercedes e-class, and audi a6. The base cts sedan is a great value at about $36,000. the cts uses rear-wheel drive, the baseline for a true sports sedan. The standard 3. 0-liter v6 generates 274 horsepower and revs freely, complementing the available 6-speed manual transmission. The upgrade 3. 6-liter v6 increases output to 304 hp, with substantially more torque, and it's rated at the same 27 mpg highway as the smaller v6. The larger v6 works great with the optional 6-speed automatic, which is one of the best in this class. Both engines feature the latest technology, with variable valve timing and high-pressure direct fuel injection for the current optimum in power, fuel economy, and low emissions. all-wheel drive is available, and it's a valuable addition in the snowbelt. The awd system uses an active transfer case that normally sends 40 percent of the power to the front wheels, 60 percent to the rear, maintaining a more rear-wheel-drive feel. But in slippery conditions the system can apply all of the torque to either axle, maximizing the cts's ability to find traction. the cts and cts-v feature sophisticated suspension systems developed, among other places, at the famous nurburgring race track in germany. Even the standard suspension delivers a good balance of handling response and ride comfort. The ride is always comfortable, but always well damped and never mushy. It's more adventurous, perhaps less cookie-cutter inspired, than its organically shaped import-brand competition. Yet the cts looks both classy and handsome. the cts line is often compared to compact luxury sedans like the mercedes c-class or bmw 3 series, and that may be a function of similar pricing. By exterior dimensions, the cts is actually as large or slightly larger than mid-size models like the bmw 5 series or mercedes e-class. The cadillac's impression of a more compact size probably speaks well of its overall design. the cts sedan and the new sport wagon are identical from the front bumper to about the middle roof pillar. The egg-crate grille design for v6 models is common across cadillac's lineup. Vertically stacked headlight clusters make heavy use of led (light-emitting diode) technology, which delivers lots of light and allows lots of style with little electrical load. The air vents or extractors near the trailing edge of the front fenders have been re-designed with a more open appearance for 2011. the cts wagon might be more handsome than the sedan, if only because its proportions are almost perfectly balanced. The integrated spoiler at the rear edge of the wagon's roof serves as both an aerodynamic device and the center high-mount brake light. The standard power liftgate can be operated with either the key fob or a switch at the rear of the car. A simple dial inside the gate allows its opening range to be adjusted, from just-above-roof height for short folks or tight garages to nearly vertical upward extension. the high-performance cts-v models get unique, functional styling features, starting with larger wire-mesh grille work above and below the front bumper. Available all-wheel drive makes the cts a good foul weather car. and the new high-performance cadillac cts-v can compete with the best high-performance sports sedans in the world at a much lower cost. fresh from being completely redesigned and re-engineered for the 2008 model year, the cts boasts responsive handling and excellent high-speed stability, yet it's smooth and quiet around town or cruising on the highway. The ride quality strikes a perfect balance between smoothness and handling. The steering is accurate, with good feel and a nice, weighty demeanor. The car feels solidly put together and quiet. Inside is an attractive cabin trimmed with nice materials with an airy, open feel. Everything is easy to operate. Simply stated, the cadillac cts is a very enjoyable car. the cts and cts-v feature sophisticated suspension systems developed, among other places, at the world-famous nurburgring race track in germany. Altogether, this is a great looking car, with adventurous lines everywhere, especially in the gracefully sloping rear roof section. the cts-v is distinguished by functional features. The power dome hood, distinctive wheel and tire package, and the bold mesh grille suggest an intent for serious driving. The larger mesh grill is for improved airflow. The power dome hood is as small as they could make it. Big brake ducts help cool the big two-piece brembo calipers. The chmsl center brake light reduces rear lift. The dual exhaust provides better performance. interiorthe theme of the cts interior is black and brushed metal and chrome. It's very contemporary, very modern, very attractive and very space efficient. The dashboard is fairly low and away from the front seats, which gives an airy and open feel to the car. The instrument package is complete, easy to read, and graphically pretty. all-in-all, the interior of the cts is a very nice to sit and take a drive. The driver is held in, yet comfortably, to properly operate the car, and the passengers enjoy a feeling of ease, confidence and luxury. Using the navigation screen, it's easy to switch back and forth between the three broadcast and three stored-music formats by simply touching the screen, and the blue display is large enough to be read from the back seat. We think it's one of the best overall, most fun-to-use sound systems we've ever enjoyed in a car. Many other luxury cars have systems that are difficult or fussy to operate. the cts-v has a sportier cabin with a steering wheel with a thicker rim available in suede. The dead pedal, allowing the driver to brace the left leg, is optimized for racing. A recaro option is available with 14-way adjustable seats, including bolsters that can be pumped up for hard driving then deflated for cruising. driving impressionthe cadillac cts is a responsive sports sedan with excellent handling and high-speed stability, yet it's smooth and quiet when cruising. the cts comes with two versions of a 3. 6-liter v6 engine, one with conventional fuel injection, rated at 263 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 253 pound-feet of torque at 3100 rpm, and the second, with direct injection, rated at 304 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 273 pound-feet of torque at 5200 rpm. Either is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, and with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. the difference in performance, feel and sound between the two v6 engines is amazing. The standard engine works well, but the direct injection engine just has more of everything; more power, more torque, more response, more driving enjoyment, and at little or no penalty in fuel efficiency. The direct injection is a more efficient system. It's also extremely responsive. We liked both of them. underneath all the attractive sheetmetal is a suspension system with a forward-mounted power rack-and-pinion steering. Too big to be compact, yet too small to be midsize, the outgoing cts straddled the line drawn by other luxury brands. With the introduction of the compact cadillac ats, cadillac has more precisely matched the bmw 3 series class, allowing it to redesign the cts as a larger car. As a result, the 2014 cadillac cts has been moved squarely into the premium midsize category, putting it in direct competition with the audi a6, bmw 5 series, and mercedes-benz e-class. the 2014 cts sedan is 4. 2 inches longer than the previous-generation (2008-2013) models, with a wheelbase that's stretched 1. 2 inches. The 2014 cts also sits 0. 8 inch lower. The new design bears a family resemblance to the compact ats and full-size xts sedan. While still based on cadillac's art and science design language, the once-radical styling of the cts has been softened, while still keeping cadillac's signature vertical lines and sharp creases. The grille is wider, with vertical stripes of led lights that run the length of the headlamps, and continue below down the foglamp housings. a choice of engines is available for the new cts. It's paired to an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for a broader power band and increased fuel economy. Cadillac says the cts vsport will dash from 0-60 mph in just 4. 6 seconds. Fuel economy is predictably lower, with an epa-estimated 17/25 mpg city/highway. Cts vsport models are rear-wheel drive only. based on the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the compact cadillac ats, the new cts uses many of the same weight saving technologies, like extensive use of aluminum in the chassis and body. The result is the lightest cts to date; cadillac says the base model has a curb weight of 3,616 pounds, nearly 200 pounds lighter than the bmw 528i. Use of lighter materials in the back, combined with a heavier rear steel suspension, help the cts to achieve a near-50/50 weight distribution. for the first time, gm's magnetic ride control suspension is optional on all cts models. The cts is also the first cadillac to use automatic parking assist, gm's automated parallel parking system. New safety features include automatic safety belt tightening, which continuously adjusts the seat belt during driving. A plethora of electronic safety systems are also available, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert and panic brake assist. though its design might not appeal to everyone, the 2014 cadillac cts is as good as any german luxury sedan when it comes to performance and handling, and outshines many with its impeccable interior materials and finishes. With many technology and comfort features coming standard, the cts is also an excellent value for the money when compared to others in its class. while the cts sedan (including vsport) is all-new for the 2014 model year, the 2014 cadillac cts-v with 6. 2-liter v8, the 2014 cts coupe, and the 2014 cts sport wagon are all still based on the previous-generation platform, as are the cts-v versions of the coupe and wagon. The power dome hood, distinctive wheel and tire package, and the bold mesh grille suggest an intent for serious driving. The larger mesh grill is for improved airflow. The power dome hood is as small as they could make it. Big brake ducts help cool the big two-piece brembo calipers. The chmsl center brake light reduces rear lift. The dual exhaust provides better performance. interiorthe theme of the cts interior is black and brushed metal and chrome. It's very contemporary, very modern, very attractive and very space efficient. The dashboard is fairly low and away from the front seats, which gives an airy and open feel to the car. The instrument package is complete, easy to read, and graphically pretty. all-in-all, the interior of the cts is a very nice to sit and take a drive. The driver is held in, yet comfortably, to properly operate the car, and the passengers enjoy a feeling of ease, confidence and luxury. Using the navigation screen, it's easy to switch back and forth between the three broadcast and three stored-music formats by simply touching the screen, and the blue display is large enough to be read from the back seat. We think it's one of the best overall, most fun-to-use sound systems we've ever enjoyed in a car. Many other luxury cars have systems that are difficult or fussy to operate. the cts-v has a sportier cabin with a steering wheel with a thicker rim available in suede. The dead pedal, allowing the driver to brace the left leg, is optimized for racing. The direct injection is a more efficient system. It's also extremely responsive. We liked both of them. underneath all the attractive sheetmetal is a suspension system with a forward-mounted power rack-and-pinion steering.
